About Crochet Explained
Crochet Explained is a reference site for people who crochet. It exists because crochet instructions have a habit of explaining everything except the part you are stuck on.
Who writes this
I am Nora Bell, and I write and maintain every page here. I started Crochet Explained after spending an entire evening stuck on a pattern that assumed I already knew what it meant. Everything here is written the way I wish it had been explained to me.
There is no content team and no rotating cast of freelancers. If a page is wrong, it is my fault, and I would genuinely like to know so I can fix it. My address is on the contact page.
How the tutorials are put together
Every technique page is written against the standard US crochet terminology used by the Craft Yarn Council, because that is what the overwhelming majority of patterns American crocheters encounter are written in. Where UK terms differ — and for a few stitches they differ in genuinely confusing ways — the page says so explicitly instead of leaving you to find out the hard way.
Conversion charts are checked against manufacturer sizing rather than copied from other blogs, which is how small errors end up repeated across the entire internet.
What this site will not do
- Republish another designer's pattern. Patterns are their authors' work. When a pattern is featured here, the link goes to the designer's own page so they get the visit.
- Pretend a photograph is something it is not. Where an illustration or diagram is computer-generated, it is labelled as such on the page.
- Recommend a product nobody has any reason to recommend. The disclosures page explains exactly how the gear guides work.
How the site pays for itself
Two ways: display advertising, and affiliate links in the hooks and yarn guides. Both are disclosed on the disclosures page, and neither one costs you anything. Every tutorial and chart on this site is free and always will be.
